Puerto Princesa Palawan (DIY TOUR) Day 1

Palawan is one of the most visited places here in the Philippines not only by foreigners but by Filipinos as well. When PAL had their promo of Boeing 777, I immediately booked online two tickets for 3 days and 2 nights though I wasn’t sure of what to expect in our first domestic travel together. Hehehe. There was only one thing on my mind:  to have our monthsary celebration there for a change.

Getting a Palawan Package Tour did not ever come to my mind for two reasons: I don’t like to spend a lot since we are on a budget (and I believe that traveling need not be expensive) and I want to be in control of the time, spend it the way we want. Searching the net and joining forums really helped me a lot. 🙂 It was pinoy exchange that gave me a lot of information about what to do in Palawan. Thanks to the pexers who patiently answered my queries.

AT THE AIRPORT, NAIA TERMINAL II – PUERTO PRINCESA

Our flight was scheduled at eight in the morning. We decided to take the MRT and get off at the Taft station. From there we took the cab that brought us to NAIA Terminal II. Actually, if we had enough time to spare, we can take a bus in going to the airport. After an hour of waiting, passengers to Puerto Princesa started to board the plane at exactly eight in the morning. We reached Palawan at around nine in the morning but left the airport at half past nine. Well, somebody took my tripod and dropped it on the floor when he found out that it’s not his. Grrrr! I hope people with that kind of attitude should vanish right away. >:-)

TIP: At the airport, you would see many tricycle drivers waiting for passengers and will approach you to take a ride with them. How much? It’s P50 for a ride. Just ignore them and walk straight until you reach the gate. Take the trike there and instruct the driver where to go. It’s only P7 per head.

We were about to leave the airport when a big guy followed us and offered us a ride but I ignored him. I told him that my “uncle” will pick us up. He kept on following us (see, i’m not that good in telling lies huh! lol) but we kept on walking until we saw Pizzito, a pizza house near the airport. Since we had breakfast at 5 am, hubby and I decided to grab some bite there. d(^_^)b

Then we waited for a trike. We were lucky to meet this trike driver whose name was almost the same as mine:  RENE: who happened to be from Moriones, Tondo. What a coincidence! @_@ Well, I took the opportunity to negotiate with him the Hunda Bay Tour. Most of the pexers told me on the forum that the tour costs P600. When I asked him of the tour, he said it’s P500 but I insisted to make it P400 instead. He agreed. Yey!

ANICETO  PENSION HOUSE, 71 Reynoso Street

After that conversation, he brought us to Aniceto Pension House, where I had a reservation for 3 days and 2 nights. It is located in Reynoso Street and owned by Ms. Tess. You can contact her through email: arc_tess@yahoo.com.ph and sms: +63927059782. 24 hour wifi access is also available.

How to reach the place by foot: From Rizal Avenue, take Roxas Street, walk straight til you reach the end of the street, then turn right. (Popularly known among tricycle drivers as corner Roxas St. and  Mabini St. at Quito )

HAIM’S CHICKEN INATO

On our way to Hunda Bay, we saw Haim’s Chicken Inato. Seafood kare-kare was our choice over the chicken inato. It only cost us P165 for: Seafood kare-kare (P120) & 3 cups of rice (P45). Well, it only has 1 piece of prawn, 3 pieces of small squids & fish cubes. Yummy? That’s what I thought…. but I was wrong!

HUNDA BAY TOUR – P1300 (Luli Island, Starfish Island, Snake Island, Pandan Island)

Upon reaching the wharf, there were no other people that I thought would share us a ride. Lucky us, a man in his fifties together with a young woman came a few minutes and inquired about the boat rental. With no hesitations at all, I asked the man if we could share in the same boat.  Instead of paying for the P1300 boat rental fee, we only paid the half of it — P650.

The first island we saw was LULI ISLAND. Luli came from two words – lulubog at lilitaw. You can see the island during low tide but it was hight tide that time, the ony thing that we saw was the cottage floating on the water. There were already people occupying the only cottage in that island. You can do snorkeling in this area if you want to. So make sure to bring goggles with you.

Next island was STARFISH ISLAND. We stopped there for a while. Mamang bangkero looked for some starfish and brought it to us. They are so cute! Of course, you cannot take them for they are alive…

Our last stop was SNAKE ISLAND. The sandbar has a snake shape. There are cottages that you can use for a small fee (donation). We had our lunch there or should I say merienda? LOL! Imagine having lunch at two in the afternoon?! The man we met  was Mr. Toto Benedicto, with a young Cebuana woman. Well, aside from treating us halo-halo which was being sold at the island, he also shared a lot of information about Palawan even his monkey businesses there. ;-P

At around 4:30 in the afternoon, they decided to go back at the wharf but I requested to drop by at PANDAN ISLAND. It is a private island a few meters away from Snake Island. I think, 15-20 minutes travel time. (What a  bumpy ride it was ! Big waves hit us at around 3pm) You have to pay P25 for the entrance and P200 for occupying the cottage. Only a few people were there… Since the beaches in the islands are not as good as the islands in Capones (promise, you will love Capones and other islands there in Pundakit!), we decided not to get off the boat. We also saw COWRIE ISLAND, a small private island owned by a businessman. Permits from the owners of the private islands are necessary.

Before leaving the wharf, we asked for some information about the name of the Bay. Others called it Hunda but for some it’s Honda. According to the personnel in the information desk, it’s name before was really Hunda Bay.

Me: Kuya, ano ba talaga name nito, Hunda Bay or  Honda Bay? (points at the tarpaulin)
FD: Hunda talaga ang name niya.
Hubby: Bakit naging Honda Bay?

SIDE TRIP TOUR: Mitra’s Ranch and Baker’s Hill

After your island hopping tour, you can also have a sidetrip tour to Vietnamese Village if you want to try the taste of Vietnamese’s noodles which unfortunately I forgot. 😦  Mitra’s Ranch that closes at 5pm to have an overlooking view of Honda Bay (nothing more other than that) and Baker’s Hill which is good for photo op because the place is sooo nice! You can also buy hopia and other kinds of bread there. My rating for the hopia and pan de coco? 3/5.  Nothing special on the taste. :-p Engbee-tin is still the best! :)) After the tour, we headed back to Aniceto.

KINABUCH’S GRILL & BAR

It’s dinner time! Aniceto Pension is quite far from Rizal Avenue. I think you have to spend 15-20 minutes of walking. But I like to see more of the city looks at night  that’s why I encouraged my hubby not to take a trike and walk instead. You can also find Chowking, Jollibee and Mang Inasal along Rizal Avenue. But hey! You’re in Palawan. Why not trying to eat in one of the best restaurants in Puerto Princesa? It’s a new experience for us to try.

After 20 minutes of walking, we saw Kinabuch’s Grill & Bar, which is always full of life in the evening. I have read in some posts that foods in Kinabuch’s are great and not that expensive. What did we order? Hmmm.. no bestseller that’s why we ordered 2 Chix ni Buchs (P75 per order), 1 glass of iced tea (45) and 1 watermelon shake (P60). Every order is exclusive of 10% service charge. I think it only cost us P280.50 for our meal including the 10% SC.  All of the food servers were approachable and accommodating.  Kuya even made this unexpected pose for me huh! Two thumbs up for them! Wohooo! We’ll definitely visit this place again! 🙂

Of course, we were so full that’s why we took  a trike to bring us home. It was already past eleven then. We had a great day…… =)

Hi! Do you think mas maganda na wag mag package tour? Thanks!

Hi Ej! Thanks for dropping by and reading my blog. Yung boat rental sa Hunda Bay is P1300. Compared to P2200, much cheaper naman yung P1700 di ba? :))) Have fun sa Palawan!

Hi Macoy!

Hi! Thanks for sharing your DIY tips with us, they’re really informative. =)

    I have some questions…
    (1) How much is the entrance fee to each of the islands?
    (2) Where did you order your lunch baon?
    (3) Are there sheds on the beaches?

    Thanks again! God bless! =)

      You’re welcome. 😉

      No Entrance Fee:
      Luli (only 1 nipa hut)
      Starfish Island (no cottages)
Snake Island (many cottages as well as paluto stores)

      With Entrance Fee:
      Pandan Island (P25; cottage P200)
Cowrie Island (permit from the island’s owner needed)

On our way to Honda Bay, we dropped by HAIM’s CHICKEN INATO. You can ask your driver to drop you there to buy food for lunch. Try their bestseller, chicken inato (inasal). Or you can buy at Snake Island.. foods there are kinda expensive. 🙂

Wishing you all the best in your Palawan trip. ;))

Didn’t you have any info in going to the underground river?

Is riding a tricycle with four persons would be ok? Do you have any contact number of the trike driver? hehe

we will be going to Puerto Princesa on March 17 to 19.

There are lots of person who gave us quotations and they are too expensive on what you’ve said in your blog about the prices.

I’m considering a van but I guess that would be much expensive right?

    Thanks!

hi candy! please check my day 2 diy palawan tour post: https://justapieceofme.wordpress.com/2010/03/06/our-diy-palawan-tour-day-2/

4 persons in a trike is okay, P7/head. I was not able to get the trike’s contact number. 😦 But most of the trike drivers are nice naman so you don’t have to worry.
If you would be taking the jeepney in going to Sabang, you’ll get the earliest trip which is 7am. You’ll get there at around 10am. The UR TOUR is only good for 45 minutes so you can take a dip in some of the beaches and have your lunch there before heading to PP but make sure you’ll be able to catch the bus to PP at 1pm. Or else, you have to stay there for a night. :)) Van rentals usually cost P3500, well it depends how good you are at haggling. By taking the van, you can relax and have fun at Sabang and go back to PP late in the afternoon. Hope this helps! Enjoy your trip! 😉

Hi. Your blog is really informative. We’re planning to go to PP next month. I would just like to ask how much it would cost us if we ride the jeepney from the city proper to Sabang? Where do we find these jeeps? And, how many hourse would the entire Honda Bay hopping last? Possible kaya na isabay ang Honda Bay hopping and Underground River tour? Hehe.

        Thanks a lot. =D

Take the blue multi-cab with the “New San Jose Terminal” signboard in Rizal Avenue. Alight at the terminal. You can ask the driver for the exact place. There are four jeepney trips to Sabang Wharf: 7am, 9am, 12nn and 2pm. BUS returns to Puerto at 1pm. The jeepney fare is P125 for Filipinos and P200 for foreigners. You can’t have the Honda Bay Island Hopping Tour and Underground River Tour at the same time. It is a 3 hour ride by bus or jeepney and 2 hour ride by private van. Honda Bay Tour, it depends on you… It can be a half day tour or a whole day tour.

      Hi Timmie,

I am so sorry… I don’t have the cp# of the trike driver but not to worry because you can find trike drivers outside the airport (along the highway) that can take you to Hunda Bay. Payment should be made when he brought you home after your tour. Don’t forget to haggle. Yes, it is possible to go to Hunda Bay once you arrive at the airport. That’s what we did when we went there a year ago. 😉 Just take your belongings with you and keep it safe when you stay in the island for swimming. 😉

WOW! What a great gift to yourself! 😉 You’ll definitely enjoy Palawan kahit mag-isa ka lang. Pero siyempre mas masaya kung may kasama.

You can check out my other blog for Aniceto Pension here with contact numbers. Salamat at napansin mong kulang, I thought na-edit ko na yun before eh. heheh.

Well, depende sa pupuntahan mo. What if you like pang mag-stay sa island na yun? That was our mistake last time. 😀

Pero since REGALO mo sa sarili mo yan, enjoy the trip ALONE. 😉 Good luck!

Thank you for reading my blog! 🙂 Well, you have a very good itinerary which is really doable in 2 days. :)) Clap clap clap!
However, I have some suggestions you might consider.
      DAY 1: Airport ~ Aniceto ~ Hunda Bay ~ Mitra’s Ranch & Baker’s Hill ~ Plaza Cuartel & Church ~ Kinabuch Grill & Bar
DAY 2: Palawan Wildlife formerly known as Crocodile Farm ~ Iwahig Prison ~ Palawan Butterfly Garden ~ Tiangge Tiangge ~ Aniceto ~ Airport
There’s nothing much to see at the NCCC Mall, you’ll just get disappointed. Isetann or Ever is way better than this mall.
Always be aware of the time on DAY 2 so that you’ll have enough time to go back to the airport prior to your departure.
Have a safe flight and enjoy your first ever DIY trip. *winks

But if you are willing to splurge in food, go to Badjao Seafront.

Hi Krizanne! I am just wondering why you have to go back to Aniceto from Bakers Hill. Going back would take you around 30-45 minutes because of the traffic condition at night. Why not go to Brgy. Iwahig right after your tour to Bakers Hill? Aside from that you can do lots of things at Mitra’s Ranch. Try the zipline there or go around. You’ll definitely enjoy the view of the islands in Hunda Bay:)) And for sure 30 minutes won’t be enough to spend at the Bakers Hill. It’s beautiful at night… After having photo-shoot with the life-sized statues and buying pastries/breads, take time to enjoy and relax at the backyard of the bakery. You’ll surely enjoy what you’ll definitely experience there. Kinda romantic… and relaxing as well. :)) You can also have your dinner there before having your River Cruise. In that way, you would be saving time and money. :))

    Hi Ms G-nang 🙂
I’m thinking to drop our things off that’s why we’ll go back to Aniceto..
Anyway, I didn’t know that traffic will take about 30mins, heheh..

BTW, have you tried the Firefly Watching?? 🙂

No, we haven’t tried that yet… When we went there for the first time, I did not include it in our itinerary because I have learned from other pexers their experiences that were not so good. Maybe the best time to do that is during dry season. Only a few comes out if it’s raining, based on what I have learned. This is not to disappoint you… just weigh your options.

It would be best if you would give them a ring. Here is the contact number of Ms. Tess: (048)4346667; 0927-2059782. Since combo ng kids at elderly ang kasama ninyo, better kung mag-rent kayo ng van instead of taking tricycle for your tours. Kindly search here na lang my other post “van rental in palawan”. 😀 Regarding the itinerary, hmmm… please check if doable ito:
Day 1: Arrival – Check in – Get a permit for Underground Tour – Tiangge Tiangge for souvenirs
Day 2: Hunda Bay tour (half day/whole day tour)
Day 3: Ugong Rock Spelunking (for kids & adults) – Lunch in Sabang – Underground River Tour
Day 4: City Tour (Mitra’s Ranch, Bakers Hill, Palawan Wildlife and Rescue Center, Butterfly Garden) – Departure (at 3pm)
Always start your tour EARLY… 🙂 Good luck in your preparation!

Hi there! If you would rent a trike for city tour, I suggest na Mitra’s Ranch, Bakers Hill, at Crocs Farm ang puntahan ninyo. Kasi as far as I know, yung P500 is good for 4 hours lang. Kahit saan may trike.. San nga pala kayo mag-i-stay?

Yeah, mas malapit compared sa Aniceto. Yung NCC mall, maagang magsara. I think 6pm closing nila. 🙂 Kakaiba noh?

At siyempre, lakad… Siguro maglalakad pa kayo to reach the Bakers and Mitra’s. Pero yung expiration date within a week lang ha. Take note of that. Last year, it was around P50 na terminal fee. Good luck sa PP trip! 🙂

Yup, it’s P1300 half day man or whole day. Much better kung meron kayong makaka-share sa boat, in that way, half the price na lang ang babayaran ninyo. :))

Hello. Your blog is very informative and entertaining. I’m planning a trip for 2 in June. Nahihilo ako kung ilang araw ba enough sa Puerto kasi plano ko Puerto for 4 days and then go to El Nido for 4 days. Sa tingin mo, ok na yon?

I haven’t finalized my itinerary yet pero siyempre priority young Underground river. Also, foodies kami so hinahabol din namin yong good restaurants.

    Any thoughts?

Thanks for the compliment. 😀 How many days ba ang vacay mo? 8 days? I think 3 days is enough na to spend for Puerto Princesa Tour. Then yung 1 day i-allot mo for going to El Nido. I’ve heard it takes 8 hours to go there. Pagdating ninyo sa Puerto, go to the Booking Office of UG Tour to make sure na makapunta kayo dun. Usually kasi nagkakaubusan ng sched eh. Last year, the day after next na yung nakuha kong schedule. Punuan na kasi that time then hapon pa pero we were able to take the tour at an earlier time. Nagawan ng paraan ng van driver namin. 🙂 Good restaurants? Madami na ngayong bago dun… Maybe you could give them a try.

Underground River the day after your arrival? Mukhang imposible yun.. Regarding your itinerary, you may email me the details (date & time of arrival & departure) 🙂
